At English Language and International Programs at UC Extension, Santa Cruz, students from more than 65 countries have been taking advantage of ELI's high-quality language and cultural training for nearly 30 years. Our dedicated faculty and supportive staff will help you create a path to success, whether you want to enroll in an American university, advance your career, or fulfill other goals. At ELI, you are our priority.
Program Description: The ELI Intensive English Program, open to both students and professionals, has 10-, 8-, 5- and 4-week sessions year-round. The core curriculum focuses on reading, vocabulary, speaking, writing, grammar, and pronunciation skills. We offer a number of electives in four different categories: Academic Skills, U.S. Culture and Communication, Business, and Special Interest.
After completion of the placement examination, ELI students are ranked accordingly:

Academic Services
Academic Advising: The ELI Academic Adviser can help you select your English courses, register for UCSC or UCSC Extension classes, or transfer into U.S. universities. Regular workshops are organized to help you learn about other study options during and after your studies at ELI.
University Transfer Program / TOEFL Waiver: If you are interested in obtaining a U.S. university associate's, bachelor's or master's degree, you may join ELI's transfer program. ELI students can receive conditional acceptance by some of our partners (such as De Anza, Foothill, or Cabrillo Colleges), without taking the TOEFL. You just need to complete our Level 5 intensive English course and have approval from our Academic Coordinator.
Internships: Advanced-level students may volunteer with a local service organization. This unpaid internship experience gives you the opportunity to practice your English in an authentic environment, meet members of the community, and gain U.S. work experience.
Professional Communication Classes: ELI offers advanced evening and weekend English classes designed for non-native business professionals. Students work with professional trainers who provide coaching in communication and culture skills for success in speaking, writing, and making presentations. Online classes are also available for busy professionals that wish to work at their own pace. You can choose to receive the level of interaction you get in a live classroom or select one-on-one distance coaching with an experienced teacher. Course CD ROMs are now available in 10 languages.
Special Tutoring:
- Private tutoring is available for ELI students who want individual lessons.
- Instruction is based on the student's needs and skill level.
- The tutor is an ELI instructor; students may choose their instructors.
- This option is strongly recommended for students with little knowledge of English.
- An additional fee is required.
- We can help you find instructors for GRE and GMAT exams.
Testing Services: ELI is an internationally approved testing center. Each term, we offer the following tests:
- MEPT (Michigan English Proficiency Test): To determine student entry level
- Institutional TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language, paper-based): For American college or university admission (arrangements may also be made for the computer-based TOEFL test)
University Studies: The ELI University Studies Program opens the door to top-quality education offered by University of California, Santa Cruz. Students with advanced-level English proficiency, TOEFL 550 paper / 213 CBT / 80 iBT, can study for up to one year in this program. USP students can take up to 15 credit hours per quarter for full university credit. You can start classes in fall, winter or spring. Acceptance into specific courses is based on available space and the instructor's approval. You may also choose to audit one or several courses without credit, to experience American university life first-hand.
Visa Information for International Students: UCSC Extension is authorized under federal law to enroll non-immigrant students. While it is your responsibility to comply with all U.S. visa regulations, ELI's dedicated staff will assist you with understanding the law.

Application Fee: $125, non-refundable.
Program Service Fees (includes Student Recreation / ID Card, Santa Cruz Bus Pass, Medical Insurance, and Student Services) cost an additional $315 to $465, depending on the length of the program.
Housing Fees range from approximately $27 per night to $39 per night. As an ELI student, you will have three main housing options: You may live at University Town Center (UTC), with an American host family, or rent a room only from a host family. Homestay accommodation is arranged by ISP-International Student Placements. During the summer, additional housing is available on the UCSC campus for groups of 20 or more. The University Town Center is located in downtown Santa Cruz, and houses dormitories, computer labs, student lounges, ESL classrooms, and our administrative office. ELI also provides general assistance to students who prefer to make their own living arrangements.

ELI has many years of experience designing customized short-term programs for schools and other organizations worldwide. Because the programs are specially designed, we can offer them for variable lengths of time, and focus on your group's needs. Typical programs are three to four weeks long, and emphasize conversational English combined with an academic or cultural subject. We welcome requests for these customized programs. We have access to the best trainers and curricula available, and can deliver the program in your country or here in the U.S. Each student receives an official UCSC certificate upon successful completion of the program.

The term international student carries many meanings in today's global workplace and academic arena. You may be coming to Santa Cruz or Silicon Valley to enroll in University of California Santa Cruz Extension courses leading to a professional certificate. You may be residing in one of our local cities for several years or planning to immigrate to California in the near future. Whatever your background, native language or future objectives, we invite you to participate in our excellent courses and programs designed to help you achieve your goals.
UCSC Extension, an established institution of lifelong learning, is the largest provider of professional education in Silicon Valley and the Central Coast. UCSC Extension offers a wide variety of professional certificate programs for international students at our two classroom facilities located in Cupertino and Sunnyvale. Certificate programs may be completed in six to 12 months depending on the selected program. Students must maintain full-time status each term by taking a minimum of 12 credit hours per quarter. After nine months of full-time enrollment and completion of a certificate program, international students are eligible for one year of Post Completion Optional Practical training (OPT).
Professional Certificate Requirements: International students enrolling in certificate programs must have a bachelor's degree or higher, and a TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or 80 (Internet-based) taken in the last two years.
