Muskingum is a small, private liberal arts college located in safe and friendly New Concord, Ohio. In the U.S., a liberal arts college is a small university which specializes in undergraduate study. Students who graduate from Muskingum have an in-depth knowledge in one particular field of study and also a great breadth of knowledge which spans many fields of study.

For a relatively small college of 1,600 students, Muskingum has an unusually rich and diverse international community! Admission Eligibility: Admission of international students to Muskingum College is mainly determined by high school grades and test scores. A TOEFL score of 213 is required for regular admission. If you are academically qualified and have a TOEFL score of at least 180, you can be accepted as a full-time student, participating in the English Support Program. Muskingum currently accepts computer, paper, and Internet-based TOEFL scores, SAT scores, IELTS scores, and Step-EIKEN results. Other standardized tests of English language ability may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Transfer students and graduates of junior colleges are also welcome. Your transcript will be carefully examined in order to transfer as many credits as possible. Advanced placement and credit is awarded to students who have completed the (GCE) A level examinations. Students are also welcome to pursue a second degree or to prepare for graduate programs.

The English Bridge Program: Students in this program will take one ESL class per semester, either ESP 082 or ESP 100, in addition to regular classes. Students may go completely into regular courses upon approval of the ESL lecturer and the Academic Affairs Office. This decision is based on the student’s grades, performance in ESL classes and the recommendations of professors. No additional TOEFL score is required. English Bridge Program students may request testing accommodations and other assistance in regular classes. Students pay regular full-time tuition to participate in this program, which includes regular courses, ESL, and all support services. Students entering Muskingum through the English Bridge Program may continue to receive the special services of the English Bridge Program.

Academic Majors: Muskingum College offers a wide choice of academic majors designed to help you prepare for direct entry into the workplace or postgraduate study in a university setting. Muskingum's personal approach helps you understand where you are now, and how to develop the skills you need to make successful transitions from high school to college and beyond. With our 16-to-1 student to faculty ratio, you'll be involved in class discussions where you'll be encouraged to ask questions of professors -- building interpersonal skills and confidence as you learn!

In addition to academic majors in the traditional arts and sciences, Muskingum offers a variety of majors, pre-professional, and teacher licensure programs that enable students to tailor their education to their interests. Major fields of study include Accounting, Anthropology, Art, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Christian Education, Computer Science, Earth Science, Economics, Education: Early Childhood, Education: Middle Childhood, Education: Special Education, Engineering Science, English, French, Geology, German, Health Education, History, Mathematics, Music, Philosophy, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Religion, Religion and Philosophy, Sociology, Spanish, Speech Communication, and Theatre. Interdisciplinary majors include: American Studies, Child and Family Studies, Conservation Science, Criminal Justice, Digital Media Design, Environmental Science, Humanities, International Affairs, International Business, Journalism, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Public Affairs, and the ability to create a self-designed field of studies. Muskingum also offers pre-professional majors to prepare students to go on to a higher level of study in many fields, including Christian Ministry, Dentistry, Law, Medical Technology, Medicine, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, and Veterinary Medicine. A nursing program is also expected in the Fall of 2008.

Application Requirements: The following items must be submitted to the Office of International Enrollment in order to be considered for admission:

  • Completed application form (with signatures and estimate of financial resources per year).
  • Official records of all high school (and university) course work: Official English translations must also be provided; unattested photocopies cannot be accepted.
  • Two or more academic letters of recommendation.
  • A 500-word essay in English describing yourself and why you would like to study at Muskingum College. The essay should be written in your own hand (not typed).
  • TOEFL, IELTS, STEP-Eiken, or SAT scores. Official results must be submitted directly by the testing agency.
  • Certified bank statements and other evidence of financial support, demonstrating the ability to pay the total cost to attend Muskingum College.

Financial Assistance: International students at Muskingum are eligible for financial assistance with academic scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $13,500 per year. The decision to award a scholarship is based primarily on two factors:

  • high school grades (and university marks, for transfer students), and
  • scores from standardized tests (TOEFL, SAT, ACT, etc.).

The application essay and personal interviews (when possible) are also considered. There is no special application process; simply apply for admission to Muskingum and you will be automatically considered for scholarships.

Other sources of financial aid from the college include performance awards in art, speech, theater, and music (portfolio and / or audition required; videos and CDs are accepted); sibling credit for two or more children in one family attending co-currently; and Presbyterian grants for members of the Presbyterian Church USA. Limited financial aid is available for exceptional students entering through the English Support Program. International students are also eligible for limited, part-time on-campus employment.
