Lamar Language Institute (LLI) is an intensive English training program, offering a comprehensive program to increase English language proficiency for persons whose first language is not English. The Institute offers a full-time (minimum of 20 hours per week) course at various proficiency levels. Students who are eligible (based on immigration status) may enroll for part-time study. Small classes allow ample opportunity for individual participation.
LLI intensive courses provide English training for university-bound students as well as non-native speakers of English living and working in the community. International students in our program work in all language skill areas:
- Writing
- Grammar
- Reading
- Vocabulary
- Listening Comprehension
- Conversation
- Pronunciation
Bridge Program: If you want to study at Lamar University but your TOEFL / IELTS or other English proficiency test scores are too low for direct admission, you may consider the Bridge Program. The Bridge Program combines admission to Lamar University and admission to the Lamar Language Institute, so you will take some English classes and some core classes for your field of study at the same time.
Lamar Language Institute faculty members are dedicated and experienced professionals who have specialized degrees and training in teaching English as a Second Language. Sensitive to the needs and concerns of international students, many faculty members have lived in other countries, speak languages other than English, and have studied various cultures.
Language acquisition is facilitated through activities outside the classroom. Students may take advantage of many opportunities to visit this area's historical and cultural attractions, specialized museums, libraries and parks. The nearby cities of Houston and Galveston offer additional cultural enrichment.

Location: Beaumont, Texas. Lamar University's 270-acre campus is located about 90 miles east of Houston, and 25 miles west of the Louisiana border. The city has a population of about 115,000 people. The area was originally known for rice farming and cattle ranching, but grew in size and scope with the discovery of oil in 1901.
Lamar University's campus is a short drive from many outdoor adventures: A day at the beach, canoeing or fishing on area rivers and bayous, hiking in the Big Thicket National Preserve. Theaters, museums and live music venues are also popular with Lamar University students.
