Experience the Excellence

at Eastern Washington University --
A 30-year history
From Dr. Jenifer Hermes,
Program Director of the English Language Institute:
The faculty at Eastern Washington University's English Language Institute faculty are experienced, professional language teachers and are regularly available outside of class for advising and individual help. In class, the active use of English is emphasized; teachers use a variety of current methods and techniques. Each term is 11 weeks in length (eight weeks in summer) with 18 to 20 hours of instruction per week.
The ELI at EWU was one of the first three schools in the U.S. to be accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). In addition to membership in the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP), we are the only UCIEP (University and College Intensive English Programs) school in the state of Washington.

The English Language Institute collaborates with many departments on campus in order to support international students both linguistically and culturally. Here are just a few examples:
The MBA Preparation Program for International Students: English Skills Support is run jointly by the ELI and the College of Business and Public Administration. The program is designed for students who wish to improve their English language skills in order to gain admission to the MBA program at EWU. Required: ELI Level 5 recommendation or TOEFL score of 525.
The Graduate Preparation Program is run jointly by the ELI and all graduate major programs at EWU. This two-quarter program provides a bridge to academic and cultural life in the U.S. for prospective EWU graduate students. Each term, students take about eight credits of graduate coursework in their field of study plus eight credits of ELI support classes. Students who succeed in both their contact coursework and their language study can be fully admitted into graduate programs, having already fulfilled all the other academic requirements for graduate admission.
Conditional Admission: Many students enroll at Eastern Washington University as undergraduates after completing the Institute. No TOEFL score is required for students who pass ELI Level 5 with the faculty's recommendation. The English Language Institute Academic Advisor assists students in the process of enrolling at Eastern Washington University.
