Why choose Duquesne University?
In 1878 when the Fathers of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (the Spiritans) created a university, they believed that it should be a place that welcomed the common student. Over the years, Duquesne has been regarded as a university with a personal touch –- catering to individual student needs. At Duquesne, we believe that the individual should be educated through the mind, the heart and the spirit, and we provide a number of opportunities that help students grow through these channels.
The mission of Duquesne University's founders has always included service to people outside the United States. Admissions Requirements for International Students
At Duquesne University, we believe that students will only succeed when they make the right match -- the decision about the type of institution they choose to spend the next several years. At Duquesne, we do not believe that an applicant can simply be reduced to a set of scores or grades; types of courses, grades and test scores are just part of your story. Leadership, community service and other extra-curricular activities also tell us more about you. Your ability to create a complete portfolio of your educational background that also includes teacher and mentor recommendations and a personal statement will help us review your credentials effectively and understand who you are as a student and a person.
International students are not required to submit the SAT or TOEFL scores as part of your admission portfolio; however, graduate applicants are expected to submit GRE or GMAT scores. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are available to those in need of English training to improve your language skills before pursuing a degree.
If you wish to apply to Duquesne, all you need to do is submit the following to the Office of International Programs:
- Application form: Online or downloadable at http://www.admissions.duq.edu/apply.html
- Secondary School transcripts from all years, and any previous university or college transcripts (for transfer students)
- At least one letter of recommendation from a teacher or mentor
- Standardized Tests: These are highly recommended if you are a native speaker of English and / or if you have attended an American-style or international-style school
- Certification of Finances such as a letter from your sponsor's (family, local government, etc.) bank stating that they will support your tuition and living costs while at Duquesne OR an Affidavit of Support Form and a bank statement that supports the amount of funding your sponsor has indicated in the bank letter or the Affidavit of Support
- Non-refundable application fee of $50.
TOEFL Requirements / English as a Second Language Program
TOEFL Results and Undergraduate (Bachelor Degree) Program: Since Duquesne University offers an on-campus English as a Second Language (ESL) Program which administers both English Placement Tests and the Institutional TOEFL Test, the university does not require submission of TOEFL results for application to undergraduate degree programs, except for online programs. All international students whose native language is not English must sit for Duquesne University English Language Placement Tests once they arrive on campus. Placement test results determine the need for any additional study of English taken either prior to or along with courses in an academic degree program. Since English is the language of instruction at Duquesne University, Placement Testing ensures that all students are prepared for their university courses.
TOEFL Results and the Duquesne University English Language Placement Tests: If an undergraduate applicant has already taken the TOEFL within the prior year, submission of the TOEFL results is strongly recommended since results may qualify for a waiver from some Duquesne University English Language Placement Tests. For example, a score of 575 (230 on the computer-based test; 88 on the Internet-based test) exempts new students from all English testing except for the written portion of the placement tests.
TOEFL and Graduate (Master and Doctoral Degrees) Programs: Most graduate programs on campus require that applicants submit the results from the TOEFL with at least a 550 on the paper-based TOEFL (213 on the computer-based test; 79-80 on the Internet-based test). However, since each graduate program sets its own minimum TOEFL requirements and also may make TOEFL-related decisions if it feels a student's application warrants special consideration, students should select their academic program and contact the Duquesne University Office of International Programs for details.
Duquesne University English Language Placement Tests and Graduate Students: All new graduate students also sit for the Duquesne University English Language Placement Tests as described above in addition to a brief test of spoken English. Applicants with a sufficiently high TOEFL may be waived from some of these tests.
Teaching Assistants: Pennsylvania State Law and Duquesne University policies require certification of sufficient English language fluency for all faculty and teaching assistants. For example, Teaching Assistants whose first language is other than English are required to sit for additional language assessment jointly conducted by their Graduate Department, the Center for Teaching Excellence and the English as a Second Language Program.
Scholarships / Financial Aid for International Students
Duquesne offers merit-based financial aid in the form of academic, athletic and music scholarships.
Undergraduate (Bachelor Degrees): Duquesne offers the Libermann Scholarship to international undergraduate students. It is based on academic merit and ranges from $1,000 to $14,000 per year. The majority of these awards are given for the fall semester each year, and are based on your past academic performance in secondary school and / or college or university. Again, please contact us for details by telling us what academic program interests you, then completing the form that follows.
Music and athletic scholarships are also available for undergraduate students, and are based on talent. International students may submit a video of their athletic or music ability with their application if they wish to be considered for such financial awards.
Graduates (Master and Doctoral Degrees): International graduate students are also eligible for scholarships and assistantships through our various graduate programs. However, funding opportunities vary according to the program, so again, select your academic preferences, and contact us for details.
