Accredited programs, affordable prices: Drexel ELC offers both in 11-week and 6-week courses year round. We'll help you develop the skills and expertise for academic, professional, and personal success. At Drexel ELC, you'll get the English you need for the future you want. Drexel ELC is located on the campus of Drexel University, in a safe residential area near the heart of beautiful, historic Philadelphia. We are accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), members of the consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP), and host the headquarters of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP).

Programs and Courses: Studying at Drexel English Language Center

• Intensive English: There are six levels of instruction, from Beginning to Advanced. Placement testing and orientation are provided, and certificates are awarded for successful completion of each full or half term. Full-time study includes 15 hours of Speaking / Listening and Reading / Writing per week, plus a three-hour Special Topic chosen from academic, business, language skills, cultural, or test preparation topics. Optional free grammar, pronunciation, and conversation classes are also available. Small classes are emphasized; the average is 10 to 12 students and the largest classes have 15 or 16 students. All ELC instructors have advanced degrees in TESOL or related fields.



• Global Business English (GLOBE): A pre-MBA program for high-intermediate to advanced level students. Participants must have a university degree and place into ELC Level 4 or higher in both Speaking and Writing. Program content includes The Language of Business Information, an integrated skills course involving concepts and key vocabulary related to specific topics such as marketing, finance, international business, and human resources. An advanced Reading / Writing class focuses on essay writing, advanced academic writing, reading skills and strategies for graduate level coursework. Students also choose a Special Topic that may include TOEFL or GMAT test preparation. Optional elective classes are also available. Special features of the GLOBE program include networking opportunities, lectures at the College of Business, MBA application workshops, and an MBA class observation.
• Custom-designed programs for specific needs, including English for Medical Professionals, English for Business Professionals, and intelligibility (accent reduction): Intended for professionals who are already in the Philadelphia area, these courses focus on the improvement of spoken or written English skills for specific purposes. Classes or tutoring for groups or individuals can be arranged.

Housing / Accommodations: Three housing choices are available to Drexel ELC students:

• World House Dormitory: $1,475-$1,875 per term ($490-$625 per month). This is the official ELC dormitory, on the Drexel campus, just 2 blocks from the ELC. World House has double and single rooms (available on a first-come, first-served basis); shared baths and kitchen; a lounge with computers and printers, TV, DVD / VCR, stereo, etc.; and a live-in Resident Director. It offers a friendly, family-like atmosphere with social activities.
• International House: approximately $1,950 per term ($650 per month). A large, dormitory-style residence for students from many universities. I-House offers single rooms, with kitchens and baths shared among 10 residents. 15-minute walk to the ELC.
• Homestay: approximately $1,771 per term + $200 placement fee ($23 per night). Live in an American home, practice your English and learn about American culture. Homestays offer private rooms, self-serve breakfast each morning, and three family dinners each week. Most are located in residential neighborhoods convenient to the ELC (30 - 45 minutes).

Activities: A unique part of the Drexel ELC is a wide range of activities, trips, and tours arranged for ELC students at discounted prices. The activities program offers students a great opportunity for enjoyment, and provides a special chance to learn about American culture while practicing English. A few examples:

• Philadelphia City Tour
• On-Campus Parties
• Professional baseball or basketball game
• Visits to Washington, DC and / or New York City
• Shopping excursions to local outlet stores

Other Special Features of Drexel ELC:

• Allison Rose Fellowships: Two or three $1000 scholarships are awarded each term to continuing full-time students. Allison Rose Fellows receive tuition remission in exchange for office work at the ELC during the term.
• Conversation Network: The program links ELC and Drexel University students and offers an opportunity to meet and talk with Americans.
• Access to university facilities: ELC students can use the Drexel library, gym and athletic facilities, language lab, computer lab and wireless internet service free of charge.
• ELC Plus: Advanced level ELC students may combine English study with part-time university coursework after one term.
