University English as a Second Language Program at Central Washington University, Washington State

We invite you to learn more about the excellent opportunities offered by the University English as a Second Language (UESL) Program at Central Washington University (CWU). The university has four quarters every year; students can enter the UESL Program any quarter. Between 60 and 70 students typically attend UESL classes. Each year, there are between 300 and 400 international students out of approximately 8,600 students at CWU. That means it will be easy to practice your English outside class. UESL students usually have American roommates, and the Program matches UESL students with American conversation partners for informal language practice. You are also encouraged to participate in many clubs, teams and activities around campus and around the community.

About Central Washington University / Conditional Admission

Central Washington University is the fastest growing four-year university in the state of Washington, due in large part to its excellent academic programs. CWU features more than 100 majors as well as ten pre-professional programs such as Pre-Medicine and Pre-Law. Some of CWU's most popular majors include Teacher Education; Accounting; Business Administration; Physical Education, Health and Leisure Studies; Law and Justice; Psychology; Industrial Engineering Technology; Administrative Management and Business Education. Conditional Admission to Central Washington University: CWU offers Conditional Admission. If you meet all of CWU's undergraduate admission requirements except the TOEFL score, you may be conditionally admitted. In order to be fully admitted to CWU as an undergraduate, you must enroll in the UESL Program and either:

  • Complete Level 5, the highest level, (minimum of B+ required in all classes) and receive strong recommendations

  • OR
  • Receive a TOEFL score of 525 paper / 195 computer

After you apply for a specific quarter, the CWU Admissions Office will give you one year in which to meet the language requirement. As soon as the language requirement is met, you will be admitted to CWU.

UESL also has relationships with several Washington community (two-year) colleges that will accept UESL recommendations instead of TOEFL scores.
