Resources for International Students

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program: Columbia College's ESL program is designed to assist students with the improvement of their English reading, writing and speaking skills. The ESL program prepares students for academic programs, courses and tasks they will be expected to perform as they pursue their academic degrees. Conditions whereby students will be considered for admission to the ESL program:

  • Students who have not taken either the TOEFL nor the IELTS exam
  • Students who have scored below 500 on the paper-based TOEFL exam
  • Students who have scored below 173 on the computer-based TOEFL exam
  • Students who have scored below 61 on the internet-based TOEFL exam
  • Students who have scored below 5.0 on the IELTS exam

An international student who does not have the English proficiency required to immediately begin taking academic coursework will be given an English diagnostic test by Columbia College. This test is administered once the student arrives on campus. This test assesses a student's written and spoken English skills, and helps determine placement within the ESL program.

Columbia College's ESL program offers instruction to students with intermediate and advanced proficiency in English. One of the special features of our ESL classes is that they will count as credit toward your academic degree at Columbia College. You may even be able to take academic coursework while you complete the ESL program. Once the ESL program is successfully completed, students receive a certificate of completion and may begin to pursue a full academic course of study at Columbia College.

International Programs: The International Programs office serves as a liaison for international students concerning their interactions with government agencies, community organizations and other campus constituents. The Director of International Programs advises students regarding immigration regulations and employment opportunities, and assists in the transition to life in the United States.

Clubs and Organizations: Columbia College believes that participation in a club or organization is an integral part of the college-learning experience. Active participation provides the opportunity for students to make a difference, develop new skills and to meet new people.

Career Services Center: The Career Services Center offers students and alumni a broad range of services, resources and programs designed to prepare them to successfully achieve personal and career goals.

Seabrook Writing Center: The writing center provides free individual assistance and tutorials to students working on papers assigned in any course taught on the home campus. Its professional staff can help students meet professor expectations as well as the student's personal goals by working on a one-to-one basis or in small groups.

Tutoring Services: Tutors are available to help students in a wide variety of subjects. Services include help with productively reviewing notes, better understanding texts, concepts and assignments, and preparing for quizzes and exams.

Individual Academic Advising: Full-time faculty, serving as academic advisors, assist students in creating a personally relevant plan for educational, career and life fulfillment.
