Sunrise / Sunshine / Sunset Markets

The good news in international student recruitment is that the whole world is our market: We need to enroll only a tiny fraction of the hundreds of thousands of students around the world who would love to study in the States. The bad news in this business is that the whole world is our market: A truly global market is overwhelming. How do we figure out how to make the most of our limited resources?

University World News offers some insight, from a geographic perspective: universityworldnews.com/article.php?story=20100918074621118

Sunrise Markets are countries of origin for globally mobile students, that may not yet be visible on the horizon but will be a source of international students in the next five to ten years:

  • Brazil
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Czech Republic
  • Georgia
  • Indonesia
  • Pakistan
  • Romania
  • Russia
  • Vietnam

Sunshine Markets have been sending a fair share of students abroad for some time, and show potential for even further growth.

  • China
  • India
  • Saudi Arabia

Sunset Markets are more traditional countries of origin, whose volumes are remaining stable or expected to decline:

  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore

Cross Promotions

Education Trade Mission to Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi: 3-8 April 2011. Led by a senior Department of Commerce official, this mission will introduce U.S. Higher Education representatives to international students and university and recruitment partners in two of the hottest markets in Asia: Indonesia and Vietnam. All appropriately accredited U.S. higher education institutions are encouraged to apply, although we see the best opportunities for success for undergraduate studies, community colleges, and English language programs. Each of the three stops will include a student recruitment fair. There will also be options for meetings with local universities interested in partnerships, high school visits, and meetings with recruitment agencies. Cost: $2,930 for all three stops (exclusive of travel and lodging). Contact Debra.Rogers@trade.gov / phone 312-353-6988, or Bernadette.Rojas@trade.gov / phone 216-522-4740.

Our schedule of U.S. education fairs around the world ranks as one of our most popular pages, fed from our 16 multi-lingual domains as well as like-minded sites. Please help us maintain this comprehensive resource for both students and international recruiters; if you know of other events that belong on the schedule, contact cheryl@USjournal.com. There is no charge for the listings, which do not imply endorsement. USjournal.com/en/students/info/fairs.html
